Holiday islands of the USA
This small, still largely rural island retains its Victorian character thanks in large part to planning controls introduced in the 1960s. It's a summer destination with stunning views, pearly beaches and lots of outdoor things to do; and the summer is long, stretching until the end of September. Don't look for designer style here: this is a simple place with just 1,000 permanent residents and a nature reserve which occupies more than a third of the island's 9.7 square miles. Hiking trails cover the waterfront and wander inland, past ponds and shingled cottages, to the Mohegan Bluffs lookout.
