Holiday islands of the USA

The maritime history of this New England island begins in the mid-1600s, almost as far back as the USA goes; but despite the 82 miles of beaches, tourism only began here in the 1950s. Even now, holidaymakers must tread lightly so as not to disturb the moneyed elite who have homes on the island. Their presence (if only in summer) ensures that Nantucket town's charm endures, prices are high, and the standard of dining and accommodation - notably at the 1920s, grey-shingled White Elephant on the harbour - is maintained. Away from the town and the beaches, there are cranberry bogs, wild heaths and quaint villages. Madaket in the west is good for sunsets, the village of Siasconset in the east for rose-covered cottages.

Getting there Car and passenger ferries operate from Hyannis on Cape Cod, and there are direct flights from many east-coast airports.
